Panthers Lose at John Jay in Four Sets

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball lost a non-conference matchup Monday evening, falling to John Jay College in four sets.

Scores for the contest were 25-17, 25-11, 20-25 and 25-15. With the result, the Panthers moved to 1-2 on the young season, while the Bloodhounds jumped to 1-1.

On the night, the Blue and Orange hit .106 overall with 27 kills. Interestingly though, their worst hitting set of the night was the third, which was the frame they won.

For the hosts, they finished with totals of .333 hitting and 49 kills.

While the first two sets of the night were decisive wins for John Jay, the third frame saw tight action between the two sides.

The Panthers initially raced out to a big lead, before the Bloodhounds quickly responded by tying the contest up at 10-10.

Over the ensuing rallies, neither side lead by more than two points until late in the match, when the guests used four-straight scores to edge ahead, 22-17.

Purchase then closed the frame out by trading points back and forth to a 25-20 win.

Following the defeat, John Jay answered with a vengeance in set four, taking it by the score of 25-15 to seal the match.

Individually, Channing Williams (FY/Neptune, NJ) powered the effort with 12 points (nine kills, two aces and two block assists) and seven digs.

Nate Matthie (FY/Bronx, NY) was also effective on both sides of the ball, collecting seven kills and seven digs.

Aidan Araza (FY/Jersey City, NJ) totaled 17 assists, while Jael Martinez (FY/Bronx, NY) chipped in eight digs.

Up next for the Panthers is a week of rest before the team returns to action in its home opener against Wilkes University. That contest is set for February 7th at 7 p.m.
