THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – A second-half goal from Rebecca Quick (SR/Millbrook,NY) helped the Purchase College women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against Maritime College on Friday afternoon. The result moved the Panthers to 3-10-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the Skyline Conference, while the Privateers sit at 5-6-1 and 1-5-1, respectively.
Despite dominating possession in the opening minutes, Purchase fell behind in the 18th minute after a goal by Maritime, put them down 1-0. The Panthers fired off 12 shots in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net against the Privateers' defense.
After halftime, Purchase kept up the pressure, and Quick's sixth goal of the season came in the 56th minute. Sophia Franklin (SO/St. Catharines, Ontario (CA)) set up the equalizer with a perfectly placed chip over the keeper from the left side of the box.
Maritime responded with a second-half surge, taking 20 shots, but the Panthers stood firm behind goalkeeper Carolyn Hough (JR/Plainedge, NY). Entering the match in relief for Jill Creegan (FY/High Falls, NY), Hough recorded 13 saves, 12 of them coming after the break, to preserve the 1-1 tie.
Quick led Purchase with seven shots, including four on goal and the crucial tally. Franklin, Lindita Selmani (SO/Brooklyn, NY), and Bailey Carlon (JR/Gilbert, AZ) each contributed four shots, adding to the Panthers' total of 25 attempts.
Purchase will break for a week and then travel to face St. Joseph's University-Long Island on October 19th for a noon kickoff.
