NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team was defeated in a Skyline Conference matchup Tuesday night, falling to Mount Saint Mary College in four sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-22, 25-21,19-25 and 28-26.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in league games. For the Knights, they jumped to 6-13 and 3-2, respectively.
To begin, the hosts raced out to a big lead after scoring eight of the first nine points.
The Blue and Orange remained resilient though, fighting back to get the lead down to just one point late, 23-22, before the Knights escaped with the first set victory.
The second frame played out much tighter, as the biggest margin was just four points. For the Panthers, they possessed the lead numerous times along the way, including down the stretch, 21-19.
However, Mount prevailed with a six-point run to earn the set and go up, 2-0.
Purchase, now with its back against wall, answered the call in the third stanza to extend the match.
The frame saw the guests rally off 10 consecutive points, turning a 17-14 deficit into set point, 24-17. Soon after, Purchase emerged with the win.
While the night eventually ended in favor of the Knights, the Blue and Orange nearly forced a fifth set with a great effort in the fourth.
The Panthers overcame a six-point deficit midway through to take the lead late, including two set points, before the hosts finally prevailed, 28-26.
Overall, Purchase finished with 37 kills on .062 hitting, while Mount recorded totals of 44 and .095, respectively.
Individually, three hitters finished with 10 kills apiece for the Blue and Orange, as
Natalia Leite (SO/Thornwood, NY),
Kalyn Cormier (SR/Houston, TX) and
Helena Carroll (FY/Lancaster, PA) each had double digits.
Carroll led the way with 15.5 points (10 kills, five aces, a block assist), 18 assists and 12 digs, while
Marcella Pena (SO/Bronx, NY) collected 25 digs in the effort.
Up next for the Panthers is more road Skyline action, as the team faces Mount Saint Vincent on October 17th at 6 p.m.
