RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team picked up its second five-set win in the last eight days Thursday night, after outlasting the University of Mount Saint Vincent on the road.
Scores for the contest were 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 18-25 and 17-15.
With the win, the Panthers moved to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the Skyline Conference. For the Dolphins, they dropped to 4-11 and 1-6, respectively.
The victory also marked Purchase's first victory over UMSV since 2009, as the Blue and Orange had lost the last 12 matchups against the Skyline foe.
For the night, Purchase enjoyed the superior offense as it struck 50 kills on a .133 hitting percentage. Mount Saint Vincent put up similar numbers in the epic showdown, finishing with 43 kills on .101 hitting.
Set one saw the Panthers enjoy a seven-point run and two four-point runs as they emerged with the crucial opening set.
After dropping the second, the guests responded in the third with another victory, as Purchase again leveraged big runs to snatch the advantage.
Mount went down swinging though, as it collected the fourth set to setup the fifth and final frame.
The last stanza was tight throughout, as neither side possessed a lead of more than two points. As the contest neared its conclusion, the hosts were firmly in the driver's seat as they collected match point, 14-12.
But the Panthers were tenacious and unstoppable down the stretch, responding by scoring five of the final six points to steal the win, 17-15.
Individually,
Kalyn Cormier (SR/Houston, TX) led the way with a team-high 12 kills, while
Lauren White (SR/Washington, DC) added 10 kills and 16 digs.
Helena Carroll (FY/Lancaster, PA) stuffed the stat sheet with 10 kills, 24 assists and 13 digs in the big win.
Up next for Purchase are nine days of rest before the squad returns at Manhattanville University on October 26th at noon.
