PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team nearly completed an all-time comeback Wednesday evening, before ultimately falling to St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn in five sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25 and 15-13.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 5-13 overall and 2-6 in Skyline Conference games. For the Bears, they jumped to 12-9 and 5-4, respectively.
Initially, it looked like the guests would roll to the win, as they secured the first two sets with relative ease.Â
But the Panthers never gave in and were rewarded with a pair of set wins during the third and fourth frames.
With the two sides splitting the contest so far, it moved to a do-or-die fifth frame.
The Blue and Orange controlled the action first, racing out to a 8-5 lead midway through. However, the Bears began to claw their way back, before tying the contest at 10-all.
From there, the two sides traded points to a 13-13 margin, until back-to-back points allowed St. Joseph's to escape with the win.
Overall, the Panthers finished with 46 kills on .059 hitting, while the guests compiled totals of 47 and .137, respectively.
Individually,
Helena Carroll (FY/Lancaster, PA) led the way after she set new career-high totals in kills (11), assists (28) and digs (22).
Lauren White (SR/Washington, DC) and
Kalyn Cormier (SR/Houston, TX) each added nine kills apiece, while
Marcella Pena (SO/Bronx, NY) totaled a career-high 34 digs and five aces.
Up next for the Panthers is Senior Day, as the squad hosts Yeshiva University on November 3rd at 11 a.m. The ceremony will begin before the game.
