PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team earned a thrilling, come-from-behind win Wednesday evening, topping SUNY Old Westbury in five sets.
Scores for the Skyline Conference matchup were 10-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25 and 15-13.Â
With the win, the Panthers of Purchase are now 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the league. For the Panthers of Old Westbury, they dropped to 3-8 and 1-3, respectively.
After dropping the first set, the hosts responded in a big way with impressive back-to-back wins in sets two and three.
They opened the second frame with five straight points as they led from start to finish, while the third stanza saw them rally from an early hole.
In fact, Old Westbury enjoyed leads of 4-0, 9-4 and 15-13, before Purchase recovered to take the lead and claim the set.
After the fourth set went to the guests, the two sides moved to a fifth and final frame to decide it all.
Initially, it looked like the hosts were going to cruise, as they raced out to advantages of 8-1 and 10-3.
But Old Westbury was relentless and didn't go down without a fight.
Slowly but surely, they trimmed the margin smaller and smaller, until finally tying the game up at 13-all.
The Blue and Orange weren't going to be denied on the night though, as they pulled off the win thanks to a kill from
Sadie Weiss (FY/Bronx, NY) and ace from
Helena Carroll (FY/Lancaster, PA)Â with the roar of the home fans behind them.
Overall, Purchase finished with 40 kills on .024 hitting, while Old Westbury recorded totals of 35 and .083, respectively.
Carroll powered the win with her game-high 17.5 points (nine kills, eight aces, one block assist) and 22 assists.
Weiss finished with a team-high 10 kills, while
Marcella Pena (SO/Bronx, NY) added a game-high 25 digs.
Up next for the Panthers is a road matchup with Mount Saint Mary College on October 15th at 7 p.m.
