PURCHASE, N.Y.- The Purchase College women's basketball welcomed back nearly two dozen alumni Thursday night, before their matchup against Medgar Evers College.
Ultimately, the night didn't end in favor of the hosts, with the score 58-50, despite an enthusiastic crowd.
Before the start of the game, head coach Steve Bower and the current Panthers presented the returning alumni with orange roses, symbolizing gratitude for their contributions to the program at center court.
The following players were those that were honored Thursday night: Imani Floyd '14, Janina Martinez '08, Alyse LaPadula '12, Jessica Biggs '13, Jessica Bullock '14, Agela Mack '10, Shayla Diaz '10, Jennifer Danio '09, Elizabeth Osowecki '16, Kristine Viven '16, Sarah Straub '11, Amber Jones '19, Nyasia Chanel '19, Jeidar Cole '15, Liila Mack '10, Alyssa Guido '12, Arta Krasniqi '20, Kayla Ortiz '18, Amani Graham '20, Karina Medina '23, and lastly assistant coach DJ Peoples '21.
After the ceremony, alumna Nyasia Chanel, stayed on to sing the National Anthem, before the lineups were announced and tipoff commenced.
The game ignited with fervent cheers from fans as both teams engaged in a head-to-head battle. The Cougars seized a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-11.
The Panthers however, clawed back in the second, tying the score at halftime, 21-all.
During the break, the Purchase alumni took to the court to reminisce and showcase their skills, while the current team prepared to reenter the court.
The second half started with the same energy level as the first, until the Cougars found themselves in a commanding position after a rapid scoring spree left them with an seven-point lead late in the third, 40-33.
Entering the final quarter at a deficit, the home team rallied valiantly, surging to a two-point lead with 5:38 remaining, the score now 47-45.
Unfortunately, Purchase couldn't maintain its momentum, only managing to score three additional points the rest of the way.
In contrast, the visitors capitalized on opportunities, adding 13 points to their tally, securing a 58-50 victory.
Individually,
Jessica McHugh (FY/Ellenville, NY) led the home team with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Carlye Graff (JR/Nyack, NY) contributed four baskets from beyond the arc, totaling 14 points and four rebounds.Â
Though it was a tough loss, the Panthers enjoyed connecting with former players and showcasing the program's growth and potential.
They now sit at 2-21 overall, while Medgar Evers moved to 8-13.
With just two regular-season games remaining, the Blue and Orange shift their focus to their upcoming road game against Sarah Lawrence College on February 17th at 2 p.m.
