PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team earned a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, as they bested York College and Bryn Athyn College at home during a non-conference tri-match.
Game One: Purchase 3, York 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-8)
During the opening match of the day, the Panthers (3-3 overall) enjoyed some fine hitting to the tune of a .389 hitting percentage and 29 kills.
Leading the way for the Blue and Orange was
Tyler Ryan (JR/Port Reading, NJ) and
Channing Williams (FY/Neptune, NJ), as the duo each finished with 9.5 points in the effort.
Ryan tallied five kills, four aces, one block assist, as well as 15 assists and nine digs. For Williams, he compiled four kills, four aces, Â a solo block and a block assist.
However, neither player led Purchase in kills. That honor went to
Jael Martinez (FY/Bronx, NY) with eight, while
Udel Phillips (FY/Far Rockaway, NY) added seven kills.
Game Two: Purchase 3, Bryn Athyn 1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17)
In the final matchup of the day, the Panthers prevailed for their second win after topping the Lions of Bryn Athyn.
The opening frame saw the hosts locked in a close battle until the midway point, when they outscored the guests, 12-6 to win the set.
In set two, the action remained tight between the sides much later this time, before Bryan Athyn used a surge to steal the frame late and tie things up.
Following the letdown, the Panthers came out with renewed focus and dominated the third frame to take a commanding, 2-1 sets advantage.
In the fourth and final set, the hosts continued to set the tone, eventually emerging with the set and match win.
Overall, the Blue and Orange hit .228, while the guests managed a percentage of .092 in the contest.
Individually, Williams powered the squad once again, this time with 21.5 points (a game-high 16 kills, two aces, one solo block and five block assists).Â
Phillips totaled 14 points on 10 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists, while Martinez added eight kills, two aces and five digs.
Up next for the Panthers is more non-conference action, as the squad travels to Baruch College on February 20th at 7 p.m.
