PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team lost a pair of contests Saturday afternoon, falling to Buffalo State and Bard College in a non-conference tri-match.
Game One: Buffalo State 3, Purchase 0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-12)
In their first matchup of the day, the Panthers were dispatched with relative ease by their SUNY counterpart.
The Blue and Orange's best effort came in set two, as the raced out to an early advantage and held it midway through at 13-9.
However, a quick rally from the Bengals turned the tide, as they went on to earn the set and match victory.
For the contest, Purchase totaled 15 kills on .000 hitting, while Buffalo State finished with marks of 29 and .364, respectively.
Individually,
Channing Williams (FY/Neptune, NY) compiled the most points for the Panthers, finishing with 7.5 (six kills, three block assists) and four digs.Â
Adding to the effort was
Udel Phillips (FY/Far Rockaway, NY) with two kills, two solo blocks and three block assists.
Game Two: Bard 3, Purchase 0 (25-22, 25-20, 28-26)
Following the defeat, the Panthers rebounded with a stronger effort in match two, as they played the Raptors down to the wire each time.
In the opening set, neither side led by more than three points throughout, as the hosts scored four of the final five points to grab the win.
The middle frame saw close action until the midway point, when Bard used a 6-0 run to pull ahead for good.
Finally, the last set of the day enjoyed the tightest action of all, despite the Panthers opening up with five-straight points. Following the early run, the guests then dropped nine of the next 10 points to fall behind, 9-6.
Purchase then either trailed or was tied with Bard the rest of the match until the score read 24-all.Â
Tyler Ryan (JR/Port Reading, NJ) momentarily put the Blue and Orange in front with a kill, before a Bard kill tied everything at 25-25.
A kill from Phillips once again shifted the advantage to Purchase, 26-25, until three-straight points from the hosts won the match their way.
In the end, the Panthers finished with 24 kills on .157 hitting. For the Raptors, they totaled 43 kills on .270 hitting.
Individually, Ryan paced the guests with nine kills and three digs, while Phillips added five kills, two solo blocks, two block assists and a team-high five digs.
Mauricio Ramirez (FY/Passaic, NJ) added 18 assists and four digs in the effort. With the losses, Purchase dropped to 4-6 overall.
Up next for the Panthers is another non-conference road matchup, this time at Saint Elizabeth University on February 29th at 7 p.m.
