PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's basketball team secured its second win of the season Tuesday night, beating SUNY Old Westbury, 51-48.
The Blue and Orange started off with a bang in the first quarter, courtesy of a jumper from Aysiah Clinton (FY/Portland, OR) and a 3-pointer from Carlye Graff (JR/Nyack, NY). The visitors answered back, keeping the score close, eventually tying the game at the buzzer, 13-13.
As the second frame began, both teams continued to trade points, until the home team gained a narrow one-point lead entering halftime, 26-25.
Following the break, the intensity heightened when Old Westbury finally gained the advantage. However, the Blue and Orange stayed neck and neck, ending the third tied 36-all.
In the final quarter, Purchase found its momentum, as it quickly grabbed the lead and held it for the remainder of the quarter. Despite a desperate attempt from the visitors, the home team held firm, clinching a hard-fought victory, 51-48.
Purchase outshot the visitors, boasting 28.8% for field goals, 31.8% on 3-pointers, and 60.9% on free throws. In contrast, Old Westbury shot 25.3%, 22.6%, and 37.5%, respectively.
Graff led the team with 12 points, while Jessica McHugh (FY/Ellenville, NY) added 11 points.
Kaylena Phagnasay (FY/Fresno, CA) also scored 11 points, while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
Next up, Purchase is home again. this time against Mount Saint Mary College on February 8th at 7 p.m.
