Purchase Bested by Centenary University

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was defeated at home Wednesday afternoon, falling to Centenary University by the score of 14-5.

With the result, the Panthers are now 0-3 overall. For the Cyclones, they moved to 3-1.

The guests opened the game with a quick strike and were off the races from there. In total, they scored the initial six goals of the contest, before the Blue and Orange got on the board in the second quarter via a Julieth Velasquez (SO/White Plains, NY) solo effort.

Centenary followed up with a pair of goals to make it 8-1, before Velasquez found the back of the net twice in a row midway through the frame.

From there, two more tallies went to the Cyclones to extend the lead back to seven at halftime, 10-3.

Following the break, Centenary compiled three more strikes, before back-to-back goals from Elaina Coppola (SR/White Plains, NY) and Catie Chios (FR/Westbury, NY) pushed Purchase's total to five.

The guests scored once more in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 14-5, where it eventually finished.

Individually, Velasquez powered the effort with her three goals, while also adding eight draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers. She led the Panthers in each category.

Chios added four ground balls, while Amy Munguia (FY/Port Chester, NY) collected three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

In goal, Amani Jamal (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) continued her breakout campaign with another 15 saves.

Up next for the Panthers is a return to road action as the team travels to Pennsylvania to face Cedar Crest College. That matchup is scheduled for March 16th at 1 p.m.
