Baseball Splits Rainy Doubleheader vs. St. Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a doubleheader split against St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon, as the squad rallied to win game one, 4-3, before dropping game two, 7-5.

Game One: Purchase 4, St. Lawrence 3 (7 inn)

In the opening contest, it was a slow going for the Panthers as they totaled zero runs and just three hits through the first six innings.

As they entered the bottom of the seventh, the hosts trailed by the score of 3-0 and were in need of some assistance ... and fast.

They got it in the form of a lead-off walk from Frank Rega (SO/West Islip, NY) and a single from Bryant Pena (JR/Queens, NY) to put two runners on for Joe Salerno (JR/White Plains, NY).

From there, Salerno played the role of hero as he blasted an opposite field homer to knock in three runs and tie the contest up at 3-all.

However, the work from the Panthers was just getting started.

With renewed life and just one out, the hosts aimed for the winning score. Five batters later, the Blue and Orange got exactly what they were looking for, as Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY) drew a bases-loaded walk to seal the victory.

In total, the Panthers finished with seven hits, as Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) and Tristen Abreu (SO/Mineola, NY) collected two hits apiece.

On the mound, Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) went six innings in the no-decision start. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out seven.

Meanwhile, reliever Justin Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY) earned the win after he pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Game Two: St. Lawrence 7, Purchase 5 (7 inn)

Following the loss, the Saints used their disappointment to fuel an early advantage as they scored a pair of runs in the third.

The margin was short lived however, as the Panthers responded with three runs in the fourth to snatch the lead away.

The first run came off a wild pitch, before Pena crushed an RBI-double down the left field line to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Abreu scored a run off an RBI-groundout to make it 3-2 in favor of the hosts.

From that moment on, the rain really began coming down and in turn, affected play on the field. After a scoreless fifth inning, the guests added another pair of runs in the sixth, with one coming directly from a rain error.

Now leading, 4-3, St. Lawrence capped its victory with a three-run homer in the sixth. The runs proved important too, as the Panthers scored twice in the seventh following a dropped flyball.

However, the Saints had enough mojo in the end, as they prevailed by the score of 7-5.

Purchase collected six hits in the performance, as Pena and Scarry combined for more than half of them, tallying two apiece.

On the mound, Alex Doskoez (5th/Eastport, NY) was tagged with the loss after he went 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits, while fanning three.

Up next for the squad is more non-conference doubleheader action, as the team hosts Hobart College tomorrow (3/10) at 11 a.m.
