Men's Volleyball Bested by Manhattanville in Five-Set Thriller

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Monday night saw another chapter in the epic rivalry that is Purchase College vs. Manhattanville College, as the latter emerged victorious in the first-ever men's volleyball contest between the two teams.

Scores for the matchup were 25-21,25-14, 16-25, 20-25 and 19-17.

With the finish, the Panthers dropped to 15-11 overall and 10-5 in Skyline Conference play. For the Valiants, the win sent them 11-15 and 7-8 overall.

While the final results produced a five-set thriller, the initial action was all Manhattanville as the hosts cruised over the first two sets.

The Blue and Orange righted the ship in sets three and four though, as the game pressed on to a fifth and final frame.

In the deciding set, the hosts raced out to an early advantage, before the Panthers rallied to not only tie the contest up, but take the lead at game point.

However, they couldn't find the score they needed at the right moment, allowing the Valiants to remain in the game. Eventually, Manhattanville capitalized by putting back-to-back kills together to seal the win.

Overall, Purchase finished with 42 kills on .118 hitting, while the hosts were slightly higher in each with 51 and .123, respectively.

Individually, Jael Martinez (FY/Bronx, NY) and Tyler Ryan (JR/Port reading, NJ) tied for the team lead in kills with 12 apiece.

Ryan also tied Aidan Araza (FY/Jersey City, NJ) for the team high in digs with 10 each, as the latter led the squad in assists with 18.

Up next for these two squads is a quick turnaround, as they are scheduled to play once again tomorrow (April 2nd), this time at Purchase College. That game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
