KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking defeats Sunday afternoon, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on walk-off hits each time.
Scores for the contests were 2-1 and 5-4.
With the result, the Panthers are now 12-14 overall and 4-4 in Skyline Conference action. For the Mariners, they moved to 17-8 and 6-0, respectively.
Game One: USMMA 2, Purchase 1 (13 inn)
The opening game was an absolute pitcher's duel between Purchase's
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) and Merchant Marine's Tyler Reistetter.
The two pitched a combined 23 innings, allowed just two runs on eight hits and stuckout 31 batters.
For Scarry specifically, he went 12 innings, allowing just one run on two hits as he fanned 14 on an incredible 195 pitches.
With the game being so pitching dominant, the first run of the day didn't cross the plate until the seventh inning, when an error allowed
Frank Rega (SO/West Islip, NY) to score the Panthers' lone run.
Half an inning later, the hosts hit an RBI-single, which tied things up with just one out to go.
From there, the stalemate continued for another six innings until the hosts drive in the winning run in the 13th via a walk-off single up the middle.
At the plate, the Blue and Orange finished with nine hits total, as
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) recorded a single and two walks.
On the mound,
Justin Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY) was tagged with the loss after he gave up the winning run on two hits.Â
Game Two: USMMA 5, Purchase 4 (7 inn)
After the epic that was game one, the two sides kept up the theatrics in subsequent contest.
Following the one-run performance, the Panthers exploded for the first four runs of the battle. The first one came in the first inning after Scarry drew a bases-loaded walk.
In the third,
Jared Rosa (FY/Bronx, NY) hit an RBI-groundout to double the margin, before an RBI-single from
Tyler Della Mura one inning later pushed the lead to 3-0.
Finally, a wild pitch in the fifth inning allowed
Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY) to cross the plate, giving the Blue and Orange their fourth run.Â
From there, things changed.
These hosts flipped the script over the final three innings, scoring twice in the fifth, one in the sixth and twice more in the seventh to earn the walk-off win.Â
Purchase finished with seven hits in the effort, as Daly and
Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) each totaled multi-hit games.
On the mound,
Alex Doskoez (5th/Eastport, NY) received the no decision, as he went 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out three.
Betances collected the loss after allowed the winning run in the seventh.
Up next for the Panthers is a quick return to non-conference action, as the team hosts New Jersey City University tomorrow (4/15) at 7 p.m.
