PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team was defeated in a non-conference matchup Monday evening, falling to New Jersey City University by the score of 19-5.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 12-15 overall, while the Gothic Knights jumped to 10-17.
The guests raced out to a big lead on the night, scoring five runs in the first inning to put the Blue and Orange in an early hole.
However, Purchase managed to trim the margin in the bottom of the first, as two errors and an RBI-triple from
Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) cut the lead to 5-3.
The score remained the same until the fifth inning, when NJCU exploded for seven runs to effectively seal the game.
The Panthers did manage to plate two more runs on the night, with one coming in the sixth inning off a wild pitch and the second in the eight off an RBI-single from
Dima Cornell-Neal (SO/Trumbull, CT).
Overall, the hosts finished with 11 hits, as Della Mura,
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY),
Joe Salerno (JR/White Plains, NY) and
Sam Saltzman (JR/Old Bethpage, NY) each collected two hits apiece.
On the mound,
Brandon Gonzalez (FR/Flushing, NY) was tagged with the loss, after he allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings of work. He also struck out six in the effort.
Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team travels to Staten Island to face St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn in a doubleheader on April 20th. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
