PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a doubleheader split Sunday afternoon, besting Manhattanville University in game one, before falling in the second contest at home.
Scores for the day were 4-0 and 5-2. With the results, the Panthers are 15-16 overall and 7-5 in the Skyline. For the Valiants, they moved to 14-16 and 6-8, respectively.
Game One: Purchase 4, Manhattanville 0 (7 inn)
Starting pitcher
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) was the hero of the day, as he tossed a one-hit complete game in the victory.
Over seven innings, the ace allowed just three base runners (the hit, a walk and a hit by pitch), all while striking out seven in the shutout performance.
With Scarry dealing on the mound, it didn't take much for the Panther offense to provide the necessary run support.
That breakthrough moment finally came in the fourth inning, when the squad knocked in three runs on RBI-hits from
Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY),
Frank Rega (SO/West Islip, NY) and
Sam Saltzman (JR/Old Bethpage, NY).
One inning later, a passed ball allowed Purchase to push its lead to 4-0, where it eventually finished.Â
Rega and Reyes each finished with two hits, one RBI and one run each.
Game Two: Manhattanville 5, Purchase 2
Following the opening loss, the Valiants responded in a big way to start game two with a two-run homer in the first inning.
One inning later, they pushed the margin to 3-0, before making it 4-0 in the fourth frame.Â
The Blue and Orange did manage to halve the advantage in the fifth, when
Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) and
Trevor Zanderzuk (SR/Manorville, NY) tallied back-to-back RBI-hits.
However, that was as close as the hosts got, as Manhattanville eventually prevailed with a 5-2 win.
At the plate, Zanderzuk, Reyes and
Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) each totaled two hits apiece.
On the mound,
Brandon Gonzalez (FY/Flushing, NY) was tagged with the loss after he allowed four runs on six hits in four innings of work.
Up next for the Panthers is more Skyline Conference doubleheader action, as the team travels to Maritime College on April 27th. First pitch is set for noon.
