THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - In just 16 innings Saturday afternoon, the Purchase College and Maritime College baseball teams combined for 65 runs in a massive fireworks display over a pair of games.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, they weren't able to leverage that offense into a win in either contest, falling by the scores of 19-18 and 23-5.
With the results, the Blue and Orange moved to 15-18 overall and 7-7 in the Skyline Conference. For they Privateers, they jumped to 23-11 and 11-5, respectively.Â
Game One: Maritime 19, Purchase 18
It what might go down as the craziest game in Purchase baseball history, the action started fast and never letup.
In the first inning, each side plated four runs, before the hosts used back-to-back frames to add seven more to their tally and lead, 11-4, heading into the top of the fifth.
However, the Blue and Orange responded with one of the best innings in team history, as they scored 12 runs in the frame.
Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) punctuated the performance with a grand slam, which lifted the guests in front, 16-11.
The offensive showcase was just getting started though.
In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime added one run, before exploding for five runs in the sixth to retake the lead, 17-16.
The Panthers then answered with two solo homers in the seventh and eighth, respectively, grabbing the advantage once more, only to see the hosts plate two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
From there, the Privateers held on to seal the insane win, 19-18.
Overall, Purchase finished with 14 hits in the effort, as
Brandon Gonzalez (FY/Flushing, NY) tallied four hits (a homer and a double), two RBIs and four runs.
Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY) finished with three hits (two homers and a double), six RBIs and three runs, while Della Mura added two hits (the grand slam and a double), six RBIs and three runs.
On the mound,
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) earned the start but lasted just 3.1 innings after allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on nine hits in the no decision.
Instead,
Alex Doskoez (5th/Easport, NY) was tagged with the loss after he allowed seven runs (four earned) in three innings of relief.
Game Two: Maritime 23, Purchase 5 (7 inn)
While the opening contest saw tight action throughout and huge offensive numbers, only the latter was true in game two as the hosts raced out to a big lead and never looked back.
For the Panthers, they began the matchup with three first inning runs, only for Maritime to best that number with five runs in the bottom half.
After a scoreless second frame, the guests got two guys home in the third to tie things up at 5-all.
However, the equal score was short lived, as the Privateers exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the third to all but seal the game.Â
From there, they added four more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to enjoy a massive day at the plate.
Overall, Purchase recorded nine hits in the matchup, as
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) collected three hits (one double), an RBI and three runs.
Reyes continued to display his power in game two, blasting two more homers to finish with four RBIs and two runs.
Philip Dragovich (SO/New York, NY) earned the start for the Panthers, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings.
The loss went to the next pitcher,
Justin Lorenzo (SR/Freeport, NY), after he was tagged with six runs on five hits in an inning of work.
Up next for the Blue and Orange is more Skyline action, as the team hosts the University of Mount Saint Vincent tomorrow (4/28) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
