PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned two big wins Sunday afternoon, besting the University of Mount Saint Vincent by the scores of 8-7 and 12-10.
With the result, the Panthers are now 17-18 overall and 9-7 in the Skyline Conference. For the Dolphins, they dropped to 14-19 and 8-8, respectively.
Following the victories, Purchase moved into fifth in the Skyline standings, with one final weekend to go. The top-6 teams make the playoffs.
Game One: Purchase 8, Mount Saint Vincent 7 (7 inn)
In the opening game, the Panthers raced out to a massive lead, only to see the guests rally and tie things up late.
Luckily, the hosts prevailed on a walk-off single from
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) as they claimed the important victory.
The Dolphins started with a first-inning run, before Purchase scored five in the second to take a commanding lead.
The fourth inning saw the guests add one more run, as the Panthers added two more to make it a 7-2 game.
The Blue and Orange looked like they would cruise from there, until a five-run explosion in the sixth tied things up at 7-all.
An inning later, Scarry drove in the winning score with two outs left to lift the Panthers.
Overall, Purchase finished with nine hits, as Scarry led the way with three hits, an RBI and one run.
Brandon Gonzalez (FY/Flushing, NY) tallied two hits (one home run), three RBIs, one run and a stolen base.
On the mound,
John Peteani (JR/Yonkers, NY) claimed the win after tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to close the game.
Before him,
Alex Doskoez (5th/Eastport, NY) earned the start and went 5.2 innings in the no-decision effort. He finished with seven runs (six earned) on six hits, while striking out two.
Game Two: Purchase 12, Mount Saint Vincent 10
Much like the first game, the second contest saw the Panthers grab the lead early, before a run from the guests tied things up late.
After Mount Saint Vincent scored twice over the first two innings, Purchase recorded three runs in the third and one more in the fourth to lead, 4-2.
The two sides then traded runs in the fifth, before the Dolphins tied things up at 5-all in the sixth.
The tie was short lived though, as the Blue and Orange answered with four runs in the frame to take a commanding lead.
However, the guests weren't done on the day. Over the next two innings, they added four runs of their own to tie the game once more, this time at 9-9.
But from there, the Panthers exploded at the plate to the tune of three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
While Mount Saint Vincent plated a run in the ninth, cutting the margin to 12-10, it couldn't add anymore.
Overall, Purchase finished with 13 hits, as
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) added three hits (a home run and a triple), five RBIs and three runs.Â
On the mound,
Christian Miesegaes (FY/Staten Island, NY) earned the start and went five innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while fanning three in the solid outing.
Instead, Gonzalez collected the win in relief, as he struckout five.
Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) earned the save after tossing the ninth inning.Â
Up next for the squad are the final home games of the year - Senior Day - against Farmingdale State College on May 4th. First pitch is set for 11 a.m., with the senior ceremony between games.
