Softball Drops Doubleheader at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team faced a tough outing, dropping both games in a doubleheader against Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue and Orange are now 9-12 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while the Knights improved to 8-16 and 7-3, respectively.

Game One: MSM 10, Purchase 0  (5 inn)

The hosts surged ahead early, notching an 8-0 lead in the opening inning, followed by two more runs in the third, leaving Purchase struggling to catch up.

Tyler Salerno (FY/Kings Park, NY), Rebecca Bronzi (JR/Lagrangeville, NY) and Melissa Harper (FY/Patchogue, NY) managed the sole hits of the game for the Panthers.

On the mound, Samantha Christopher's (FY/North Babylon, NY) pitched first and after four walks and five runs, Katie Straub (FY/Lynbrook, NY) took over pitching duties. Straub conceded five runs on eight hits, accompanied by five errors and two walks.

Game Two: MSM 13, Purchase 5 (7 inn)

Mount Saint Mary continued their dominance into the second game, capitalizing with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Purchase, however, rallied in the third inning, securing five runs to narrow the gap.

In the inning, Jade D'Errico (SR/Wantagh, NY), Salerno, and Harper each singled, loading the bases. Bronzi's fielder's choice brought home D'Errico followed by Kelly Jennings (SO/Yorktown Heights, NY) and Christopher's walk, bringing in another run. An error allowed Maria Konieczny (FY/Hadley, MA) to reach first, loading the bases again, setting the stage for Katherine Combe (JR/Brooklyn, NY) who doubled, bringing home three runs.

Despite the Panther's effort, the Knights responded with six additional runs over the final innings, sealing a 13-5 victory.

Leading the offensive push was Combe, whose double resulted in three RBI's.

Pitching the second game was Abigail Lipkin (SO/Bethlehem, PA) who conceded 10 runs on seven hits, accompanied by seven errors and six walks over two innings. Olivia Goff (FY/Syracuse,NY) pitched the other three innings and allowed two runs on one hit, with four walks and one strikeout.

Looking ahead, the Blue and Orange will face Hunter College on Tuesday, April 23rd, in a doubleheader matchup starting at 3 p.m.
