NEWARK, N.J. - The Purchase College men's soccer team was defeated in its 2024 season opener Sunday afternoon, falling to New York University by the score of 7-0.
The first goal came in the 14th minute, before a second strike doubled the margin in the 23rd.
In-between those two goals, the Panthers produced back-to-back shots on goal from
Bart Moroney (SR/Breezy Point, NY) and
Oliver Broun (SO/Athens, GA), though neither was able to slip past the keeper.
As a result, the score remained 2-0 into halftime.
Following the break, the status quo continued until the the 63rd minute, when the floodgates opened for the hosts. Over the final 27 minutes of play, NYU produced five goals to cruise to the big win.
In total, the Violets outshot the Panthers, 34-6 overall and 21-3 on goal.
Broun produced three shots in the effort, while goalie
Jack Gjokaj (SR/Thornwood, NY) collected 14 saves for the Blue and Orange.
Next up for Purchase are nine days of rest before the team returns for the Skyline Conference opener, as they host Yeshiva University on September 10th at 7:30 p.m.
