NEWARK, N.J. - The Purchase College women's soccer team faced a tough challenge on Sunday evening, falling 7-1 to Rutgers-Newark. With this result, the Blue and Orange dropped to 0-2-0, while the hosts improved their record to 1-1-0.
Rebecca Quick (SR/Millbrook, NY) put the Panthers on the board at the 27:07 mark with a well-placed shot, assisted by
Lindita Selmani (SO/Brooklyn, NY). The early goal gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead and momentarily stunned the Scarlet Raiders, who had already taken 17 unsuccessful shots before Purchase found the back of the net.
Rutgers-Newark quickly responded with relentless pressure, taking 11 more shots in the remainder of the half. They equalized in the 41st minute, and just before the halftime whistle, Araxiel Cardenas-Saenz scored to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 lead.
After the break, the hosts came out strong and went on an offensive spree, scoring five unanswered goals in the second half.
Carolyn Hough (JR/Plainedge, NY) stood tall in goal, facing 50 shots, 30 of which were on target, and made an impressive 23 saves.
Up next, the Blue and Orange continue their road campaign, heading to SUNY Delhi on September 4th.
