PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Saint Elizabeth University in a home game on Friday evening. With the result, the Panthers improved to 2-6-0, while the Eagles fell to 3-3-1.
After a scoreless first half where both teams tested each other's defenses, the Panthers came out strong in the second half. The breakthrough came from Rebecca Quick (SR/Millbrook, NY) scoring her fourth goal of the season at 86:11. Quick's goal was assisted by Lindita Selmani (SO/Brooklyn, NY), who delivered a well-placed cross from the right side to the center of the box.
Less than a minute later, at 87:04, Jess McHugh (SO/Ellenville, NY, NY) doubled the Panthers' lead with her first goal of the season, assisted by another clever play from Selmani. The sophomore forward set McHugh up with a backheel pass in front of the goal, sealing the win for Purchase.
The Blue and Orange dominated offensively, launching 29 shots with 16 on target, compared to just four total shots from Saint Elizabeth.
Individually, Quick led the team with eight shots, while McHugh and Selmani combined for 10 shots between them.
Goalkeeper Carolyn Hough (JR/Plainedge, NY) anchored the Panthers' defense with three saves, securing the clean sheet.
The Panthers will return to action with a quick turnaround, hosting Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University at 11 a.m. on September 22.
