PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team celebrated their home opener with a 2-0 victory over Brooklyn College on Friday evening. With the results, the Panthers improved to 1-3-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2-1.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Blue and Orange created multiple opportunities, with Lindita Selmani (SO/Brooklyn, NY) coming close in the 20th and 27th minutes, only to be denied by Brooklyn goalkeeper.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Selmani found the net off an assist from Elyza Colon (JR/New Rochelle, NY) to make it 1-0. The Panthers continued to apply pressure, and Rebecca Quick (SR/Millbrook, NY) doubled the lead with a goal in the 85th minute, sealing the win for the Blue and Orange, 2-0.
Goalkeeper Carolyn Hough (JR/Massapequa, NY) made three crucial saves to maintain the shutout.
Purchase outshot Brooklyn 18-8, with seven on target to the Bulldogs' three.
Individually, Quick led the team with five shots, two on target, and one goal in 72 minutes of play. Selmani followed closely with four shots, three on target, and one goal over a full 90 minutes. Bailey Carlon (JR/Gilbert, AZ) and Julieth Velasquez (JR/White Plains, NY) each added four shots, while Jessica McHugh (SO/Ellenville, NY) registered one shot.
The Panthers return to action on September 10th, facing Bard College at 5:00 p.m.
