OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team fell victim to a buzzer beater Tuesday night, as SUNY Old Westbury outlasted Purchase in a Skyline Conference matchup, 76-75.
The dagger came with 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock, as Amadi Lee-Kane converted a layup from Zion Williams.
The chance came after
Rashid Nikiema (JR/Winooski, VT) appeared to lift the Panthers to victory, as he made a fantastic driving layup to hand the Blue and Orange the lead with just seven seconds to go.
However, Old Westbury quickly inbounded the ball to Williams, who then raced down the court. As he slashed his way into the lane, three Purchase defenders crashed leaving Lee-Kane free next to the hoop.
He then converted the layup and left Purchase with no chance at a winner.
As the hosting Panthers celebrated, the visiting Panthers left the court with their heads high despite the tough result.Â
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Blue and Orange, as they moved to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the league. For the hosts, they jumped to 7-8 and 2-5, respectively.
The close finish was a testament of the resilience of Purchase on the night, as the squad initially fell behind by 15 points in the first half, before settling for a two-point margin at the break.
In the second half, neither side led by more than five points as each team possessed the lead over the final 20 minutes.
Over the final 2:30, neither side could buy a basket though, as a lone free throw was the only other point scored outside of the layups during the final seconds.
Overall, Old Westbury enjoyed an edge in shooting percentage and 3-pointers, while Purchase kept things close thanks to a great outing at the free-throw line.
Individually, Nikiema paced all players with 33 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Trey Skeete (JR/Brooklyn, NY) added a career-high 21 points, five rebounds and five steals, while
Matthew Phillips (SR/Bronx, NY) chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Up next for Purchase is a return home, as it hosts Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State College on January 25th at 2 p.m.
Proceeding the game at noon will be a boys high school basketball matchup between local area school,
Harrison High School and
Newburgh Free Academy.
