UNION, N.J. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team went 1-1 at the Kean University tri-match Saturday afternoon, falling to the hosts in straight sets before rebounding with a four-set victory over the University of Mount Saint Vincent (UMSV).
The Blue and Orange are now 1-2 on the season, while Kean improved to 3-4 and CMSV dropped to 0-2.
Game One: Kean 3, Purchase 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-21)
The Panthers struggled to find their footing in the opening match against a strong Kean squad. Purchase hit .115, while Kean recorded a .327 hitting percentage to secure the sweep.
Channing Williams (SO/Neptune, NJ) led with 11 kills and eight digs.
Udel Phillips (SO/Far Rockaway, NY) and Tyler Ryan (JR/Port Reading, NJ) contributed five and four kills, respectively.
Victor Ruiz (FY/Bronx, NY) paced the offense with 14 assists.
Game Two: Purchase 3, UMSV 1 (25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 25-12)
In the second match of the day, the Panthers bounced back with a strong performance, defeating the Dolphins for their first win of the season.
Purchase's defense stood tall, holding VMSV to a .034 hitting percentage, while the Panthers hit .108.
Williams once again led the way, totaling 12 kills, three blocks, and one ace.
Ryan added a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Phillips chipped in eight kills, three blocks, and one ace.
Tony Acosta (FY/Bronx, NY) served up three aces, Victor Ruiz totaled 18 assists and eight digs, while Hector Ruiz (FY/Bronx, NY) anchored the defense with a team-high 17 digs.
The Panthers are back on the road on January 28th to face Hunter College at 7 p.m.
