Purchase Prevails For Senior Day Victory

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a hard-fought win Saturday afternoon, besting Sarah Lawrence College by the score of 2-1.

With the victory, the Panthers moved to 5-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the Skyline Conference. For the Gryphons, they dropped to 4-8-3 and 1-6-1.

Before the game kicked off, the Blue and Orange celebrated a pair of seniors - Luca Li Vigni (Staten Island, NY) and Nivek Palmer (Spanish Town, Jamaica) with words, gifts and pictures to commemorate the occasion.

From there, the squad turned to the major task at hand - getting a crucial Skyline Conference win.

The hosts got the start they were looking for, as they found the back of the net in 20th minute.

Yahir Tafoya (SO/Mount Vernon, NY) scored the chance off a rebounded save from Parker Lewis (FY/Binghamton, NY), as the keeper just couldn't get the ball away.

The score remained 1-0 until the 61st, when Tafoya doubled the margin for the Panthers, as he netted a second strike off a long free kick in from Martin Nikprelaj (SO/Bedford, NY).

Despite the deficit, the guests did not go down without a fight and made the final third a true battle.

They did manage a goal in the 68th minute, but Purchase held off anymore over the last 20 minutes to secure the result.

Overall, both sides finished with nine shots apiece (6-5 on goal for PC), as Tafoya collected three shots.

In goal, Luca Valeriano (FY/Bronx, NY) finished with three saves and the victory.

Up next for the Panthers is the final road game of the year, as they travel to south to face St. Joseph's University-Long Island. That game is set for October 22nd at 6 p.m.
