PURCHASE, N.Y. - After being held to just four goals over their last four games, the Purchase College men's soccer team erupted offensively on Saturday, cruising past The College at Old Westbury.
The score for the contest was 4-2, as the hosts kept their playoff hopes alive in the process.
They will now enter the final game of the season needing a win and help from other schools, but they have given themselves a chance.
With the win, the Blue and Orange moved to 6-9-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the Skyline Conference. For the Panthers of Old Westbury, they dropped to 6-9 and 4-6, respectively.
Despite the massive win, Purchase actually started the game on its backfoot early on as Old Westbury scored in just the third minute.
The hosts soon collected themselves though, as
Outman Ait Sidi Ahmed (FY/Wappingers Falls, NY) scored off a ball from
Martin Nikprelaj (SO/Bedford, NY) in the 15th.
20 minutes later, the Panthers scored two more over a short span to grab a stranglehold on the contest.
The first strike came in 37th minute from
Jacob Pence (FY/Asbury, NJ) via a feed from
Parker Lewis (FY/Binghamton, NY), before
Yahir Tafoya (SO/Mount Vernon, NY) finished off with a tally in the 40th.
Following halftime,
Christos Argyros (FY/Bronx, NY) padded the margin to 4-1 after he found the back of the net off an assist from Ait Sidi Ahmed in the 66th.
Overall, the two sides were nearly identical in the statsheet, as they both finished with 21 shots overall and 10 on goal.
Individually, Pence led the Panthers with five shots, including three on goal.
In net,
Nicholas Sheridan (FY/Ansonia, CT) collected the win after tallying seven saves over 87 minutes of relief work.
Up next for Purchase is the regular season finale, as it hosts the University of Mount Saint Vincent on October 29th at 7 p.m.
