NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team settled for a draw Saturday afternoon, after a late goal from Mount Saint Mary College led to a 1-1 finish.
With the result, the Panthers now sit at 4-6-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the Skyline Conference. For the Knights, they moved to 5-3-4 and 2-1-2, respectively.
On the day, the Blue and Orange struck first after a perfectly taken set piece.
In the 17th minute, the duo of
Felix Robinson (SO/Bronx, NY) and
Yahir Tafoya (SO/Mount Vernon, NY) linked up for the play after both lining up over the kick.
While it looked like Robinson was going to take the free kick initially, as soon as the whistle blew he ran over the ball as Tafoya stepped up and knocked a pass over in his direction.
Robinson quickly found the ball and unleashed a blistering shot into the top right of goal to give the Panthers the lead.
That margin held through halftime and late into the contest until the 86th minute.
While the Knights' offense had pushed and prodded all game long, the Purchase defense continued to hold strong.
However, one moment of lapsed coverage was all the hosts needed as a one-timed shot in the box found the back of frame. In the end, the two sides settled for the draw.
Overall, Mount Saint Mary more than doubled Purchase on shot attempts (18-8), while also outpacing with on goal shots (9-5).
For the Panthers, Robinson and Tafoya each recorded three shots apiece in the effort. In goal,
Luca Valeriano (FY/Bronx, NY) tied his career-best with eight saves.
Up next for the squad is a return home, as it hosts Farmingdale State College on October 7th at 7 p.m.
