Down 2-0, Purchase Rallies for Five-Set Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team completed a comeback win Thursday night, rallying from 2-0 down to prevail over Bard College in a five-set thriller.

Scores for the contest were 20-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 15-12. With the win, the Panthers moved to 2-4 on the season, while the Raptors dropped to 3-7.

All night, the action between the two sides remained close as four of the sets were decided by five points or less.

While the guests initially took the opening two frames to race in front, each stanza saw the Blue and Orange play well as the foundation of a comeback was there.

It all got started in the middle frame, when the hosts rallied late to extend the match. Entering the final stretch, the Raptors led 20-17, before four-straight points put the Panthers ahead finally.

With renewed breathe, the Panthers played like a team possessed in set four, tallying their best hitting percentage and 13 kills. As a result, they earned another win to further extend the night.

In the last frame of the contest, the action was tight once more.

Bard enjoyed the advantage early, turning the sides of the court with a 8-6 margin. After each side scored three straight, the guests now led 11-9, before the Blue and Orange fired off four points in a row.

Now with a two-point advantage (13-11), the Panthers fought off a Bard kill thanks to back-to-back attacking errors to seal the win, 15-12.

In total, Purchase finished with 51 kills on .220 hitting on the night. While impressive, the Raptors actually produced slightly better with 56 kills on .224 hitting.

The difference was errors, which favored the hosts as they used fewer to emerge with the victory.

Individually, Tyler Ryan (JR/Port Reading, NJ) finished with a team-high 17 kills and seven digs.

Channing Williams (SO/Neptune, NJ) added 16 kills, seven digs and three block assists, while Hector Ruiz (FY/Bronx, NY) chipped in nine kills, two solo blocks and an ace.

Victor Ruiz (FY/Bronx, NY) totaled 28 assists and two aces, and Tony Acosta (FY/Bronx, NY) finished with 14 digs in the effort.

Up next for the men's volleyball team is more non-conference action, as the team travels to NYC to face CCNY on February 11th at 7 p.m.
