Baseball Thwarted by Union in Season Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team kicked off the 2025 season Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of non-conference contests to Union College.

With the results, the Panthers moved to 0-2, while the Garnet Chargers jumped to 3-1.

Game One: Union 8, Purchase 1 (7 inn.)

In the opening contest, the guests raced in front after a bases-loaded first inning walk. From there, they added three more runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning to make it, 6-0.

The top of the sixth inning saw Union add another two runs, before the Blue and Orange responded in the bottom half of the inning with their lone run of the contest.

It came courtesy of Liam Daly (JR/Babylon, NY) off an RBI-single. On the day, the Panthers finished with four hits overall, as Daly led the way with two and stolen base.

Tristen Abreu (JR/Mineola, NY) and Frank Rega (JR/West Islip, NY) provided the other two hits in the effort.

On the mound, Myles Scarry (5th/Levittown, NY) went four innings in the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out four.

Game Two: Union 11, Purchase 3 (7 inn.)

The second game of the day didn't change the fortunes for the Panthers, as the Garnet Chargers once again enjoyed the lead early.

This time around, the visitors scored four runs over the first three innings, before Purchase got on the board in the fourth when Patrick Reyes (JR/Plainedge, NY) scored on a passed ball.

However, Union used an offensive explosion in the sixth to effectively seal the game, as it produced seven runs in the frame to lead, 11-1.

The Blue and Orange bats continued to work though, as they knocked in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The first came off an RBI-double from Matthew Deall (SR/Manorville, NY), before Scarry singled Deall home during the next at-bat.

Overall, the Panthers totaled six hits in the second contest, as Panos Sinis (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) led the way with two hits, including a double.

On the hill, Christian Miesegaes (SO/Staten Island, NY) went five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits.

Up next for the Panthers is a non-conference road matchup with Centenary University on March 4th at 3 p.m. The contest was originally set for tomorrow but was postponed due to impending weather.
