PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Purchase College sophomore
Channing Williams became the men's volleyball single-season leader for kills Wednesday evening, as the Panthers fell at St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
Williams (Neptune, NJ) entered the night needing just nine kills to break the previous mark of 371. In the end, he finished with 18 kills to smash the record, as he now stands with 381 on the year.
The previous record stood for nearly decade, as Kevin Carges '17Â set the high during the 2015 campaign.
To compare the two seasons, Carges set his 371 total in 27 games and 92 sets, while Williams set his new mark in just 26 games and 89 sets.
Even more impressive for Williams and the Panthers, is that the team has seven more regular season games to go, so he has a legitimate chance to reach 500 kills and obliterate the previous school mark.Â
Only time will tell.
As for tonight, the Blue and Orange fell in the contest to St. Joseph's-Long Island in straight sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-15, 25-8 and 25-20. With the result, Purchase moved to 13-13 overall and 6-5 in the Skyline. For the hosts, they are now 14-6 and 12-0, respectively.
Big runs set the tempo all night for St. Joseph's, as the Panthers just couldn't break their rhythm.
Overall, the guests finished with 28 kills on .042 hitting, while the Golden Eagles totaled 34 kills on .370 hitting.
Individually, Williams paced the action with his game-high 18 kills.
Ayden Mercado (FY/Brooklyn, NY) added 26 assists, while
Tony Acosta (FY/Bronx, NY) collected 13 digs in the effort.
Up next for the squad is a few days off, before it travels to New Jersey to face Ramapo College in a Skyline Conference matchup on March 24th at 8 p.m.
