OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was defeated in a low-scoring affair Friday afternoon, falling to SUNY Old Westbury by the score of 6-2.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline Conference. For the Old Westbury Panthers, they moved to 2-2 and 2-0, respectively.
The hosts opened the contest with back-to-back goals in the first quarter, before
Julieth Velasquez (JR/White Plains, NY) found the back of the net with just over a minute remaining the period.
The game remained tight into halftime, as the Green and Black scored just once in the second quarter to lead, 3-1.
Following the break, Old Westbury scored three more goals over the third and fourth, before
Catie Chios (SO/Westbury, NY) scored her fourth of the season to make the final score, 6-2.
Overall, the two sides were identical on shots with 23 each, while the Blue and Orange won the ground-ball battle, 37-29. The main difference for Purchase was finishing 1-for-6 on free-position shots.
Individually, Velasquez tallied a game-high 11 shots (five on goal), seven ground balls and one draw control.
Chios collected seven shots, seven ground balls and two draw controls, while
Amani Jamal (SR/Hopewell Junction, NY) recorded 12 saves, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Up next for the Panthers is more road Skyline action, as they travel to Mount Saint Vincent on April 1st at 6 p.m.
