Panthers Earn Split at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team split a pair of Skyline Conference games Sunday afternoon, after battling Mount Saint Mary College to a win in the first contest of the day.

With the split result, the Panthers moved to 7-13 overall and 5-1 in the league. For the Knights, they now sit at 8-9-1 and 3-1, respectively.

Game One: Purchase 10, MSMC 7 (7 inn.)

The opening game saw early swings, as the hosts scored four runs in the first, only for the Blue and Orange to respond with five runs over the second and third innings.

The two sides then fought to tie scores of 5-5 and 7-7, before the decisive strike came from Evan Biener (FY/Hillsdale, NJ) in the seventh.

With the game tied at 7-all, he drilled a shot over the fence to score two runs and give the guests the winning runs they needed.

In the end, Purchase finished with 10 runs on 12 hits. Mason Compton (SR/Carmel, NY) led the way with three hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs.

Frank Rega (JR/West Islip, NY) and Panos Sinis (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) each tallied two hits apiece in the win.

On the mound, Brandon Reybok (JR/Lindenhurst, NY) got the start, allowing seven runs (five earned) over five innings. In relief, Justin Lorenzo (SR/ Freeport, NY) earned the win, after he went two innings and gave up just one hit.

Game Two: MSMC 14, Purchase 9

The second game of the day saw even more offensive fireworks, as the two sides combined for 23 runs on 26 hits.

The Panthers raced out to an early 4-0 over the first three frames, before the Knights exploded for 11 runs over the third through fifth innings to collect the lead for good.

The Blue and Orange did manage to trim the margin to just two runs in the sixth innings (11-9), but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

Overall, they finished with nine runs on 10 hits, as Sinis, Rega, Myles Scarry (5th/Levittown, NY) and Patrick Reyes (JR/Plainedge, NY) each collected two hits apiece.

On the hill, Compton got the start, where he allowed three runs on five hits over a three-inning no decision. Joshua Huerta (FY/Queens, NY) collected the loss in relief, after giving up seven runs (four earned) over an inning of action.

Up next for the squad is a return to non-conference action, as it travels to New Jersey City University on April 2nd at 3:30 p.m.
