JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a big comeback win Wednesday afternoon, besting New Jersey City University by the score of 17-14 in a non-conference matchup.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 8-13 overall. For the Gothic Knights, they dropped to 9-10-1.
Over the first three innings, it looked like the hosts were going to romp to victory, as they outpaced the Blue and Orange, 13-4.
However, the guests from New York stuck with it, and slowly edged their way back into a competitive contest and eventually, the lead.
Over the final four innings, the Panthers put up three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, three in the sixth and three more in the seventh to transform the deficit into a 17-13 lead.
While NJCU did manage a run in the bottom of the seventh, it wasn't enough to overcome the incredible effort of Purchase at the plate.
In total, the guests finished with 13 hits, as
Patrick Reyes (JR/Plainedge, NY) led the way with three hits, six RBIs and two runs.
Mason Compton (SR/Carmel, NY) also enjoyed an outstanding day, reaching base six times (two hits and four walks) and scoring six runs.
Liam Daly (JR/Babylon, NY) added two hits and two RBIs, while
Joe Salerno (SR/White Plains, NY) crushed a grand slam in the fifth inning to help shift the momentum.
On the mound, six pitchers saw action as no one pitched more that 1.1 innings on the day.
Colin D'Onofrio (FY/Stamford, CT) collected the win after striking out three and allowing just one hit over five at-bats.
Up next for the squad is a Skyline Conference home doubleheader with Maritime College on April 6th, beginning at 11 a.m.
