PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games against The City College of New York Sunday, falling in the first before holding on to win the final contest.
Game One: CCNY 12, Purchase 5 (7 inn.)
To begin, the guests scored first on a bases-loaded walk in the opening inning, before
Frank Rega (JR/West Islip, NY) came to the plate in bottom half of the first to drive in two runs via a double.
From there though, the Beavers added six runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding lead, 7-2, as they paced the action the rest of the way.
For the Panthers, they scored three more runs in the effort as
Tristen Abreu (JR/Mineola, NY),
Liam Daly (JR/Babylon, NY) and
Ben Sciarra (FY/Brooklyn, NY) each knocked in RBI-singles.
On the mound,
Brandon Reybok (JR/Lindenhurst, NY) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits. He also fanned six in 3.1 innings of work.
Game Two: Purchase 12, CCNY 11 (7 inn.)
After a relatively straightforward contest to begin the day, game two turned out to be anything but that.
Initially, it appeared like the Panthers were going to cruise to victory as they raced out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and 11-0 after five.
However, CCNY never quit and managed to furiously race back late, scoring nine runs in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at 11-all.
Luckily, the Panthers still had one more chance in the bottom of the frame, allowing Rega to play the hero.
While he started the game on the bench to enjoy some rest after catching game one, head coach
Adam Taraska called on him in the seventh to guide a young pitching staff through a tough spot.
Rega then came to bat with two outs, two runners on, and eventually laced a single to left field to send the Panthers home with a walk-off win.
Overall, the hosts finished with 12 hits in the contest, as Daly and
Luke Ciszewski (FY/Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) each tallied three hits apiece.
The latter finished with a team-high four RBIs, while
Panos Sinis (JR/Pound Ridge, NY) totaled three RBIs.
On the mound,
Justin Lorenzo (SR/Freeport, NY) collected the no decision despite an outstanding outing. He allowed no runs on two hits over five innings of work, while striking out four.
Michael Silverstein (FY/Brooklyn, NY) received the win after striking out the final batter in the seventh.
Up next for the Panthers is a week of rest, before beginning Skyline Conference play against Yeshiva University on March 16th.
