PURCHASE, N.Y. – In a tightly contested non-conference matchup, the Purchase College men's tennis team fell just short against Western Connecticut State University, dropping a 4-3 decision Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 2-2 on the season and the Wolves improved to 4-6.
In doubles play, Purchase picked up a win at the No. 2 spot, where Steve Mains (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) and Oliver Culliton (SR/Boston, MA) fought to a 7-6 victory. However, the guests took No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the early 1-0 advantage.
Purchase responded strongly in singles. Eli Palagatshev (JR/Yonkers, NY) dominated at No. 1, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Dexter Pretnar (SO/Mohegan Lake, NY) and Culliton added victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Despite the push, WestConn held on by claiming wins at No. 2, 3, and 6 singles to edge out the match.
Up next, the Blue and Orange return to Skyline Conference action on April 14th when they host St. Joseph's University-Long Island at 5 p.m.
