Women's Lacrosse Bested by Maritime

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was stopped at home Wednesday night, falling to Maritime College by the score of 18-2.

With the loss, the Panthers fell to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the Skyline Conference. For the Privateers, they moved to 6-5 and 3-1, respectively.

The guests opened by scoring the first nine goals, before the Blue and Orange broke the streak with a strike in the second quarter.

The goal came courtesy of Julieth Velasquez (JR/White Plains, NY), as she scored off a solo effort with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half.

At the midway point, the Panthers trailed, 11-1.

Following halftime, Maritime scored five more in a row, before Velasquez again broke the run with an up-goal in the fourth period.

In the end, the final score favored the guests, 18-2.

Overall, Purchase finished with three shots, two draw controls and 19 ground balls in the effort.

Velasquez led the charge with the two goals, one draw control, three ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Annelise Durkin (SO/Mattituck, NY) added four ground balls and a caused turnover.

In goal, Amani Jamal (SR/Hopewell Junction, NY) recorded 13 saves, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. With the 13 saves, Jamal broke the 400-career saves mark, as she now sits at 402 all-time.

Up next for the squad is the first of three straight Skyline Conference road games, as they face Manhattanville University on April 12th at noon.
