NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team cruised past John Jay College Saturday afternoon, kicking off the 2025 season with a 4-2 win.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 1-0 overall, while the Bloodhounds dropped to 0-2. The victory was also the first for new head coach
Bruno Ferreira, who took over the program back in January.
From the very beginning, the guests were in control and it showed early with a quick strike.
In the ninth minute, senior captain
Luca Li Vigni (Staten Island, NY) scored the first goal of the year for the Blue and Orange, as he found the back of the net off a feed from
Parker Lewis (FY/Binghamton, NY).
Eight minutes later, the hosts responded after converting a penalty kick, tying things up at 1-1.
However, Purchase regained the lead late in the first half, thanks to their own penalty kick goal fromÂ
Martin Nikprelaj (SO/Bedford, NY) in the 41st minute.
Following halftime, the Panthers secured the win after
Yahir Tafoya (SO/Mount Vernan, NY) scored in the 60th, before
Oliver Broun (JR/Athens, GA) provided an insurance strike in the 88th.
Overall, the Blue and Orange outshot John Jay, 13-11 overall.Â
In goal,
Nicholas Sheridan (FY/Ansonia, CT) collected five saves and the victory in his collegiate debut.
Up next for Purchase is another road contest, as the squad takes on York College on September 3rd at 3 p.m.
