PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team collected its first Skyline Conference win of the year Saturday afternoon, outlasting St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by the score of 1-0.
With the victory, the Panthers moved to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the league. For the Bears, they now sit at 0-6-1 and 0-1-1, respectively.
Over the 90 minutes of action, just one moment lead to a strike, but that was all the Blue and Orange needed in the effort.
The moment came in 22nd minute off a corner kick, when
Aylwyn Ganzhi-Siguencia (FY/Astoria, NY) headed home the chance from
Yahir Tafoya (SO/Mount Vernon, NY).
The pass met Ganzhi-Siguencia on the far left of the box, before he flicked it high across the goal face into the top right corner.
From there, the Panthers produced numerous other scoring chances, including a chance in the box that lead to a St. Joseph's team save off the goal line.
However, Purchase just couldn't find the back of the net again, which left the door open for Brooklyn.
While the guests pushed hard for an equalizer, especially late, the Blue and Orange defense held firm to secure the clean win.
In the end, the hosts prevailed in the hard-fought contest with a 1-0 result. Offensively, they outshot the Bears, 19-9 overall, 6-2 on goal and 8-4 on corner kicks.
Tafoya finished with a match-high six shots (one on goal), while
Luca Valeriano (FY/Bronx, NY) earned the win after a two save performance.
Up next for Purchase is more home Skyline action, as the squad hosts Maritime College on September 30th at 6 p.m.
