Purchase Thwarted in Five Sets

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Despite the early advantage, the Purchase College men's volleyball team was defeated at home Tuesday night, falling to New Jersey City University in five sets.

Scores for the contest were 23-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 15-11.

With the result, the Panthers moved to 1-3 on the year, while the Gothic Knights now sit at 2-0.

Over the first two sets, the Blue and Orange played phenomenally. The second frame saw the squad put up 13 kills on a .632 hitting percentage en route to an impressive win.

However, as the game progressed, NJCU showed why it is is force in men's volleyball. Slowly but surely, the guests pulled away and prevailed over the final three sets to steal the contest.

But despite the loss, the Panthers displayed progress against a foe from the past that previously won with ease.

Overall, Purchase finished the night with 48 kills on .181 hitting, while the guests tallied totals of 54 and .340, respectively.

Individually, Jael Martinez (JR/Bronx, NY) and Udel Phillips (JR/Far Rockaway, NY) each finished with 16.5 points apiece to led the way.

Hector Ruiz (SO/Bronx, NY) added 12 kills, while Danny Kanner (FY/Smithtown, NY) tallied 40 assists and eight digs.

Up next for the squad is more non-conference action as the team hosts Hunter College on January 23rd at 7 p.m.
