KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team used a big second half to earn the win Wednesday evening, topping the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 74-67.
With the result, the Panthers are 8-13 overall and 6-6 in the Skyline Conference. For the Mariners, they dropped to 7-13 and 4-7, respectively.
After a low-scoring opening half (25-23 for the hosts), the Blue and Orange responded with 51 points over the next 20 minutes to snatch the tough road win.
A 13-1 run midway through the frame flipped a 43-all tie score to Purchase's favor, 56-44, with just over eight minutes to go.
From there, the guests lead for good in the game, as USMMA wasn't able to get closer than four points the rest of the way.
Overall, the Panthers shot 43.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from long range. For the Mariners, they made 51 percent of their shots but just 36.8 percent on 3-pointers.
The Blue and Orange also dominated on offensive rebounds (12-6) and in turn, second-chance points (11-4), which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Individually,
Trey Skeete (SR/Brooklyn, NY) paced everyone with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals. He went 7-for-15 on 3-pointers.
Chris Hunter (SR/Charlotte, NC) added 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals, while
Desmond Ward (SR/Queens, NY) chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Up next for the men's basketball team is more road action at Mount Saint Mary College on February 7th at noon.
