PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team was defeated at home Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference matchup to Western Connecticut State University, 10-6.
With the result, the Panthers fell to 0-5 to begin the season, while the Wolves jumped to 3-0.
On the day, the guests scored three runs in the first, before an RBI-single from
Frank Rega (SR/West Islip, NY) in the bottom half made it 3-1.
From there, WestConn added two more runs in the third, before
Patrick Reyes (SR/Plainedge, NY) drove in a run off a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
After a visiting run in the sixth further padded the margin, the Blue and Orange responded with a trio of scores in the seventh inning.
Jordan Cassuto (FY/Seaford, NY) knocked in two on an RBI-single, before
Brian Saldana (FY/Middletown, NY) plated another run with a sac fly to make it 6-5.
However, that was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the way, as the Wolves scored twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
In total, the hosts finished with 11 hits, as Rega led the way with three. Cassuto and
Tristen Abreu (SR/Queens, NY) each tallied two hits apiece.
On the mound,
Sean Fanning (FY/Smithtown, NY) was tagged with the loss in his first career start. He went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.
Up next for the squad is more non-conference action as it takes on Union College on March 14th for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
