Purchase Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader Weekend

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team split a pair of non-conference doubleheaders this past weekend, dropping two to Union College and sweeping John Jay College.

Game One: Union 4, Purchase 3 (8 inn.)

The Panthers nearly took the first game after they rallied back to grab the lead in the eighth inning, 3-2, thanks to RBI-double from Tyler Della Mura (SR/Rye Brook, NY).

However, the Garnet Chargers responded in the bottom half with a pair of runs to earn a walk-off victory.

In total, the Blue and Orange finished with six hits as Della Mura led the effort with two hits.

On the mound, Brandon Reybok (SR/Lindenhurst, NY) received the loss after he went 7.2 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out eight.

Game Two: Union 19, Purchase 11

The second game of the day was an equally tough result for Purchase, as the squad held leads of 10-1 in fifth and 11-4 in the seventh, before ultimately falling.

A 13-run explosion from Union in the eighth inning completely flipped the script and handled them the win.

At the plate, the Panthers totaled an incredible 22 hits, as Della Mura and Frank Rega (SR/West Islip, NY) each recorded four hits apiece. In total, eight players finished with multi-hit games.

On the mound, starting pitcher Christian Miesegaes (JR/Staten Island, NY) went six innings in the no-decision outing. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while fanning four.

Game Three: Purchase 7, John Jay 2 (7 inn.)

The following day, things flipped in favor of the hosts as they cruised to their first wins of the season.

Jared Rosa (JR/Manhattan, NY) knocked in all the runs necessary in the third inning when he crushed a grand slam to right field to make it a 4-0 contest.

Later in the inning, Patrick Reyes (SR/Plainedge, NY) scored two more on an RBI-single, before Michael Pagano (FY/Franklin Square, NY) added the seventh run in the fourth inning via a sacrifice fly.

In the end, the Blue and Orange finished with nine hits in the victory, as Rosa and Dominick Coniglio (SO/Kings Park, NY) each recorded two hits apiece.

On the hill, Brian Saldana (JR/Middletown, NY) cruised to his first win of the year, as he went six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, while also striking out six.

Game Four: Purchase 9, John Jay 3 (7 inn)

In the final game of the weekend, the Panthers started off with three runs in the second, before the guests added a trio of their own in the third.

Following that tie score, the hosts exploded once more to the tune of six runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to jump ahead, 9-3.

In the end, that is were the scoring finished as Purchase finished with nine hits.

Reyes, Cameron Cruz (JR/Throggs Neck, NY) and Robert Nunez (SO/Franklin Square, NY) each totaled two hits apiece.

On the hill, Louis Gonzalez (FY/Yonkers, NY) earned his first collegiate win, as he went six innings in the start. He allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits, and had a strikeout.

With the results, the Panthers are now 2-7 on the year.

Up next for the squad is more home action as it hosts SUNY Cobleskill on March 18th at 3 p.m.
