PAXTON, Mass. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was stopped during its 2026 season opener Saturday afternoon, falling to Anna Maria College by the score of 11-5.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 0-1, while the AMCATSÂ now stand at 1-3 overall.
To begin, the hosts scored the first three goals, before the Blue and Orange got the year started with back-to-back goals from
Bernie Seweryn (SO/Brooklyn, NY) and
Julieth Velasquez (SR/White Plains, NY).
From there, Anna Maria scored six straight to seal the win, as the guests eventually closed the contest with three goals in the fourth quarter.
The first two came from
Catie Chios (JR/Westbury, NY) on man-up attempts, before Seweryn scored her second of the day to make it 11-5.
In total, the Panthers won the draw-control battle, 10-9, but were thwarted on shots, turnovers and clears.
Individually, Velasquez finished with the goal, six ground balls, six caused turnovers and five draw controls.Â
Claudia Beasley (SR/Irvington, NY) added an assist, a ground ball and caused turnover, while
Annelise Durkin (JR/Mattituck, NY) totaled three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
In goal,
Savannah Haynes (FR/Yonkers, NY) tallied 13 saves in her collegiate debut.
Up next for the squad is the home opener, as it hosts Centenary University on March 17th at 6 p.m.
