PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team rallied to earn a tough win Friday night, overcoming the University of Mount Saint Vincent in five sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-27, 25-15, 19-25, 25-23 and 15-9.
With the win, the Panthers moved to 8-10 overall and 7-1in the Skyline Conference. For the Dolphins, they dropped to 6-13 and 2-8, respectively.
It was a tale of two nights for the Blue and Orange, as they played awesome in the three sets they won, while noticeably dropping off in the two they lost.
Overall, they finished with 54 kills on .333 hitting. The guests nearly matched the effort with 51 and .306, respectively.
After nearly rallying back in the first set, the hosts responded with a dominating outing it set two, before again falling flat in the third frame.
The fourth frame then saw the guests ahead midway, 15-12, before the Panthers rallied to extend the match, 25-23.
In the deciding set though, it was all Purchase as the squad hit a match-high .533 with nine kills on 15 points.
Individually,
Hector Ruiz (SO/Bronx, NY) had the best match of his Purchase career, as he finished with a career-high 24.5 points and 23 kills on .543 hitting.
Danny Kanner (FY/Smithtown, NY) also set new career highs with 47 assists and seven aces, while
Jael Martinez (JR/Bronx, NY) had an all-around great game with 16 kills, a team-high eight digs and two aces.
Up next for the squad is a few days of rest, before they return to action at SUNY Old Westbury on March 23rd at 6 p.m.
