PURCHASE, N.Y. - The SUNY Purchase men's soccer team secured its first win of the season Friday evening, besting Centenary University by the score of 5-1.
The contest also served as the backdrop for our latest hall of fame induction, as the 2014 Skyline Conference championship men's soccer team joined the hall at halftime.
With the result, the Panthers and the Cyclones both moved to 1-3-1 on the year.
The hosts started the contest early, scoring off a corner kick header just two minutes in, courtesy of
Mason Dilone (FY/Brooklyn, NY).
Six minutes later, the Blue and Orange doubled its margin, thanks to a strike from
Christopher Rubio (FY/Mastic, NY).
From there, a
Jacob Pence (SO/Asbury, NJ) penalty in the 19th minute made it 3-0, before the contest eventually concluded as a 5-1 win.
The Panthers finished with 18 shots, including six on goal, as they made the most of their chances.
The squad also saw excellent play in goal, as
Nicholas Sheridan (SO/Ansonia, CT) recorded 10 saves in nearly 85 minutes of action.
Up next is more non-conference home action, as Purchase welcomes Brooklyn College on September 16th at 7 p.m.
The game wasn't the only action on the day though, as the contest served as the perfect pairing to induct our newest member into the Purchase Athletics Hall of Fame.
During halftime, members for the 2014 men's soccer squad came to midfield as highlights from their season were talked about and each team member was given plagues to commemorate the ceremony.
With its induction, the squad became just the fifth team in the hall of fame, joining four men's basketball teams from 2024.
Additionally, before the game began, the teams, hall of famers, referees and fans all took time to honor the occasion as the event took place on the 25th anniversary of September 11th.
