Purchase, NY
(Oct. 9, 2010) – Purchase fell behind early and was never able to regain its footing Saturday afternoon on the turf, falling 6-0 to visiting Sage.
The Gators, who scored four goals in the first half, netted the game's first score off the foot of Chris Modelowski. His first goal of the season came off a corner kick.
At 23:12, Sage added its second goal. This time Kris Kallenbach recorded his first goal off an assist Chris Giustina. Dillion Nugent and James Mignon capped the scoring in the first half, adding scores at 32:07 and 37:53, respectively.
Sage scored twice more in the second half. Giustina added a score to make it 5-0 and Chris Peralta wrapped the scoring at 56:39 off an assist by Connor Thompson.
The Panthers have looked more cohesive of late, with several players stepping up following some much-needed roster changes by head coach Ricardo Lyon-Trapp.
Nick Esposito (JR/Dover Plains, NY) has returned to form and looked strong in the starting lineup of late. Teammate
Colin Mainella (FR/ Plaistow, NH) also did a nice job moving the ball in the midfield. Purchase has relied heavily on the play of defender
Joe Antolino (FR/West Harrison, NY) and midfielder
Michael Beckett (FR/Yorktown Heights, NY), who's play of late has also helped Purchase improve defensively.
A knee injury to Beckett in the first half didn't help Purchase's cause Saturday afternoon. Beckett had to be helped off. He exited on crutches.
Purchase kept the pressure on, but the Panthers were just over matched by the ever-improving Gators. Sage improved to 5-5-1 and 4-1-1 in conference play. Purchase is now 1-9-2 and 0-5-1.
The Panthers, coming off a hard-fought 3-3 double OT tie, have played their best soccer of the fall the last few games, despite their record.
Purchase hosts MSMC next Wednesday at home.
