Purchase, NY
(Oct. 4, 2011) – An evening after standout
Blaise Bourgeois learned that he had been named Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the sophomore newcomer picked up right where he left off, joining teammate
Stefan Gohler in dismantling visiting St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn.
The duo piled up four first-half goals, setting the tone in a 10-0 win over the Bears. SJC-BKLYN, a new varsity team, battled Purchase in the first half, but was simply overmatched by the Panthers in this contest. The Bears, fresh off their first program win against Webb, had trouble containing Bourgeois (SO/Rochester, NY) and Gohler (FR/Brooklyn, NY). The tandem ran rampant in the first half as
head coach James Quiroga quickly cleared his bench following their barrage.
The high-scoring first half gave many of the substitutes an opportunity to play. Purchase's promising underclassmen got a chance to shine against the still developing Bears.
Making contributions were rookies
Dylan Hyman (FR/San Francisco, CA), who replaced
David Kurzweil (SR/Bedford, NY) in goal, and fellow newcomers
Andreas Papadimitropoulos (JR/Goshen, NY),
Dan Pena-Zuniga (SR/Madrid, Spain),
Carlos Aguirre (SO/Bedford, NY) and
Noah Kellman (JR/Syracuse, NY).
But it was Bourgeois and Gohler that stole the show early. Bourgeois got things rolling early and often, netting consecutive goals for a quick 2-0 lead. It was his 12th and 13th scores of the season. Gohler, who assisted on Bourgeois' second score, followed with his seventh and eighth goals of the fall, the second of which came off an assist from
Ki Walker (SR/Royalton, VT).
Two nassisted scores and a pair of nice passes from Gohler and Walker later, and the Panthers had essentially sealed the win, up 4-0. Reserve Kellman capped the scoring in the first half with a beautifully dribbled ball that beat his defender before he lofted a chip shot over the St. Joe's keeper.
Although he surrendered 10 goals, SJC-BKLYN's goalie Michael Miner made several dazzling plays in a losing effort. Overall, the Bears struggled defensively.
The Panthers added five more scores in the final stanza as
Zach Miller (FR/Saratoga, NY) and captain
Shomari Dias (SR/West Hempstead, NY) recorded their first goals of the season. An own-goal by SJC-BKLYN made it 8-0 before Kellman and Kurzweil wrapped the scoring with a pair of late goals.
Kellman finished with two scores of his own in the game, while Kurzweil, the team's starting keeper, earned his second of the season.
The Bears fell to 1-4 in the non-conference contest, while Purchase improved to 6-2-1 on the season.
The Panthers will now travel to Old Westbury Sunday for a game that was rescheduled. That matchup was originally slated for Saturday.
