(Jan. 9, 2012) – Purchase College women's basketball got back to its winning ways Monday night at home, holding off John Jay College, 65-57.
The Panthers led comfortably at the break (37-22), but the Bloodhounds cut the lead to six inside the final two minutes of the second half before Purchase sealed the victory. Nonetheless, the win was much needed for Purchase (4-6), which had come in losers of four straight.
Purchase started strong in the first half thanks to some nifty shooting from
Alyssa Guido (SR/Cliffside Park, NJ). She finished the first half with 11 and rounded out her best game of the season, scoring 26 in an impressive second half surge. The forward also grabbed 10 rebounds and inched closer toward 1,000 career points – a mark she will likely exceed in the coming week.
Forward
Jess Lindsay (SO/Rochester, NY), who was named to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll earlier in the day for her breakout performance last week, added 14 points and six boards. Captain
Alyse LaPadula* (SR/New Rochelle, NY) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and shared the game-high in assists (6) with
Jessica Bullock (JR/Thiells, NY).
The Panthers held a 41.3 to 32.8 field goal percentage for the game, but were outrebounded 34-33 in what developed into a close finale in the final five minutes.
Collectively, Purchase pulled together to end the mini losing streak.
John Jay had three players finish in double figures, led by Jamecia Forsythe's 15 points.
Up next, Purchase will host Old Westbury Thursday.
