(Nov. 28, 2012) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners upended Purchase 69-56 Wednesday night in Kings Point.
USMMA improved to 2-0, dropping the Panthers to 1-3.
Merchant Marine junior forward Kristina Walz led all scorers in the contest with 17 points; her nine rebounds tied a game high. Captain Shendi Josephs had 16 points and also nabbed nine rebounds.
The Mariners never trailed in the contest, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first 2:14 of play. The Panthers quickly adjusted, slowing down the Mariner offense with a full court press.

USMMA would then go on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes. Extending the Merchant Marine lead to 26-17, the Mariners would not see their advantage drop lower than five for the remainder of the game.
USMMA took a 34-25 lead into the break. The second half was flooded with fouls and turnovers as each team committed their share of infractions and mental mistakes.
For the Panthers, tri-captain
Jess Lindsay (JR/Rochester, NY) led the team in scoring with 16 points and also had nine rebounds.
Purchase will now open its conference schedule on the road against Sage Saturday before returning to the campus for Monday's home opener.
